The Real Deal on Sensitive Skin

Hey Gorgeous,

It's Cody Montarbo here from Montarbo Skincare, and it's time for some real talk. I’m here to spill the tea: most of you don’t have sensitive skin – you’ve got sensitized skin from using too many products and not treating your skin right.

Yup, I said it! Sensitive skin is often confused with normal reactions to new products or now is being self diagnosed as a broken skin barrier. Your skin might break out when you try something new, but that’s not sensitivity – that’s just your skin being resilient and doing its job!

Understanding the Causes of Sensitive Skin

Before you panic and buy yet another overpriced “sensitive skin” product, let’s break it down. True sensitive skin can be genetic or hormonal. Conditions like eczema or rosacea? Those are legit. But most of us are dealing with skin that’s been made sensitive by overuse of products, fragrances, and not-so-great skincare habits. Think of it as your skin becoming a bit high-maintenance because we’ve been overindulging it.

The Skinny on Skin

First things first – your skin is a superhero. It takes UV radiation, keeps out bacteria, pollutants, and all kinds of nasties, all while holding it together for you every day. So let’s stop calling it sensitive and start treating it with the respect it deserves.

Here’s what really makes your skin sensitized and freak out:

  • Using products with perfume or fragrance.
  • Applying too many active ingredients at once.
  • Skipping sunscreen.
  • Scrubbing your face like you’re trying to remove a stain.
  • Washing with hot water.

Now, onto the good stuff. If you think you have sensitive skin, ask yourself these questions:

  • Is your skin red and easily irritated?
  • Does it react to weather changes, alcohol, or stress?
  • Are you using a ton of different products?

If you’re nodding yes, your skin might just be sensitized, not sensitive. And that’s a good thing because it’s easier to fix than you think. In my next blood post, I'll talk about all things sensitive skin so please stay tuned.

Skincare Routine – Keep It Simple

Step one: simplify your routine. Your skin doesn’t need 20 different products. Start with the basics:

  1. Gentle Cleanser: Ditch the harsh soaps and hot water. Use cool or lukewarm water instead.
  2. Hydration: Opt for water-based products with humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid.
  3. Barrier Protection: Seal it all in with something like Aquaphor or shea butter – just make sure it’s non-comedogenic.
  4. Active Ingredients: If you’re ready to level up, start with retinoids. They’ll strengthen your skin over time. Just go easy!

Your Skin, Your Story

Sensitive skin is often just a sign that your skin's been through too much. It’s like your body’s way of telling you, “Hey, slow down!” Pimples and breakouts don’t happen overnight. They’re a signal – stress, poor diet, lack of sleep – it all shows up on your face eventually.

So, next time your skin acts up, look at what’s happening inside. Your skin is a messenger. Listen to it.
